Statement from The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse in Response to President Trump Declaring the Opioid Epidemic a National Public Health Emergency

October 26, 2017

For the millions of Americans affected by opioid addiction, this issue is personal. But, to save lives, action is needed on a national level. President Trump’s declaration of the opioid epidemic as a public health emergency has the potential to free up much needed federal resources to help prevent and treat opioid addiction and reduce overdose deaths. This is an important first step towards underscoring the urgency of this problem and encouraging the type of long-term investment our nation needs to solve the addiction crisis. Yet, it is not enough.  Federal and state leaders must work together to address this epidemic, with the federal government providing states the resources they need to develop an effective response.

For state leaders seeking additional guidance on how to address the epidemic in their own region, The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse has developed Ending the Opioid Crisis: A Practical Guide for State Policymakers. This guide contains policy recommendations and best practices grounded in a public health framework -- an approach proven to be effective for addressing addiction. Our Center is available to partner with states to optimize federal and state funding to help end this epidemic.

By working together and developing an approach rooted in science, we know we can overcome this crisis.
