Center on Addiction Raises Record $2 Million at Historic 26th Anniversary Gala

New York, N.Y., May 3, 2018

Center on Addiction, formerly known as The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, raised a record $2 million at its 26th Anniversary Gala on May 2 at the Pierre Hotel in New York City. The event drew nearly 800 guests, including notable personalities in sports, media, finance and entertainment.

“We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support for our movement to end addiction, but are heartbroken by the reality of this tragedy,” said Joseph J. Plumeri, Executive Chair of Center on Addiction. “An astounding 175 people die from overdoses each day. That is simply unacceptable.”

New York Yankee legend Mariano Rivera and KKR Co-President and Co-Chief Operating Officer Scott C. Nuttall each received the 2018 Distinguished Service Award for their leadership and commitment to supporting children in communities across the nation. “Their support will save lives and inspires others to take action,” said Plumeri. “A problem of this magnitude requires leadership like that of Mariano and Scott.”

Additional high-profile gala attendees included Wendy Williams, television host and actress; Curtiss Martin, former NFL running back for the New England Patriots and New York Jets; Dwight Gooden, NY Mets baseball legend; Rachel Robinson, a former professor, registered nurse, and the widow of baseball player Jackie Robinson; and Mike Richter, a former ice hockey player with the New York Rangers. Broadway star Tovah Feldshuh and The Broadway Boys, a group of Broadway’s most talented singers, performed at the event.

Before assuming the role of Executive Chair, Plumeri was an integral part of many well-known financial institutions, serving as chairman and CEO of Willis Group and CEO of Citibank North America. His life was turned upside down when he lost his son to addiction. Since then, he has channeled his energy and passion into helping other families affected by the devastating disease.

At the event, Plumeri spoke about the nonprofit’s 26-year legacy of groundbreaking research on addiction – including its efforts to sound the alarm about the impending opioid epidemic in 2005. He also announced the organization’s new name: Center on Addiction. Plumeri then unveiled a new logo that represents its commitment to overcoming addiction with compassion and action, and debuted the new tagline – “We can do this” – which serves as a rallying cry for the American public.

“We know what is needed to end this heartbreak, and we are taking action to make sure our voice is heard,” said Creighton Drury, President of Center on Addiction. “We are grateful for the many supporters of our movement – their compassion for the millions of Americans struggling with addiction is moving. I am confident that together, we can do this.”
